Growing Up (Sloane’s Song) – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft Ed Sheeran
Hallelujah! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back charming us with their relatable rap lyrics and mixes which are impossible not to singalong to. Not only this, but in their latest offering they’ve joined forces with Ed Sheeran and the result? A hit for sure.
Macklemore recently had baby daughter Sloane. He wrote Growing Up ahead of the birth and before he and his wife knew what sex it would be. In the first verse he talks as if it’s a girl, in the second a boy. The heartwarming song offers the child advice for how to tackle life, talks about his fears he won’t be a good father, how amazing her mother is and more. Remember how Same Love just spoke so much sense but also provoked a lot of emotion? Well this song does exactly the same thing.
“They say girls shouldn’t be tough
And moms should raise their kids at home
But baby, I know that that isn’t true
Cause your momma’s the toughest person I know
I wanna raise you to be like her
And watch you show the world how to do it on your own”
The chorus demands immediate attention with Sheeran showcasing his signature grunty high notes. It’s punchy and effective and the sort of chorus everyone will singalong to. It’s an interesting contrast to the verses which are more conversational sounding than the typical Macklemore tracks.
A piano melody that drifts beneath the steady drum beat adds an extra element to the chilled-out sound before a brass section comes in and really take things next level. The highlight of the song is at the end when the trumpets blare over Sheeran’s voice in a bouncy melody and the backing choir picks things up a notch and turns the final chorus into a grin-invoking masterpiece.
What a song!
